Palmyra, Syria, Christmas Day 2010

Palmyra isn't fenced in. You go half a mile from the modern town and across the sand into the remains. It's vulnerable to looting. If there was security it wasn't obvious. No-one approached me, and in terms of visiting Roman (and earlier) ruins, it was daft not to once have to pause because another tourist was going to be in the photo. There weren't any.
