A European Peacock butterfly a long way from home. In the last few years these have appeared in the Montreal area, thousands of kilometres from their native territories in Europe. They are now well established and seem to be here to stay.

Hi, thanks very much. I don't know how they got here across the Atlantic, but apparently, they hibernate through the winter and then lay eggs in Spring, so it is possible one or two tried to overwinter inside a shipping container or something similar and woke up to find themselves on another continent? Just a guess.
