Vesuvius main crater A volcano is a vent or chimney which transfers molten rock known as magma from depth to the Earth's surface. Magma erupting from a volcano is called lava and is the material which builds up the cone surrounding the vent.

Walter Burley Griffin's city incinerator Adelaide
This was designed and built in the 1930s. Today the city's waste is dealt with in other ways and places, but Griffin's wonderful incinerator has been preserved. An art space, a music rehearsal room, are two of its recent uses. Griffin, an American, designed Canberra, the national capital of Australia
