E2A-2 - The Convict Van is now at Maud Railway Museum, and was officially opened / unveiled on Saturday, 3rd September 2016.

In 1886 the Admiralty began building the Harbour of Refuge breakwaters at Peterhead. It was decided to quarry granite at Stirling Hill, using the (hard) labour of convicts who were housed in the prison built for the purpose. Two and a half miles of the only state owned standard gauge prison railway - at the time - was built to convey prisoners and stone. The sole surviving convict van (one of four built in 1915) is to be restored as part of the "Rocks, Rogues, Rails and Refuge" project to explore this aspect of social and transport heritage. Once completed the van, and associated displays will become part of the Maud Railway Museum, in Aberdeenshire.

There are some historical images - plus some of more recent date - to "set the scene" now uploaded, these will be followed by those showing progress of the actual restoration.

The Van has now (18th March 2014) arrived at our workshops. It has been set down and some preliminary assessments made - this has included correcting most of the sideways spreading of the body. We have started extraction of the ironwork, including removed some of the roof sheets, for assessment. Work has also begun on the replacement underframe.
Much of the repair work to the van's external ribs is now complete, the ironwork in being painted prior to re-installation. We have put in a floor, which unlike the original, will be painted. The "Crinkly Tin" roof has also been painted.
