{OK} WR (O&A) GD 2013 - Grace Darling commemoration.

In commemoration the rescue of the survivors from the wreck of the "Forfarshire" at The Farnes on 7th September 1838.

On Saturday, 7th September 2013, the restored pulling lifeboat "William Riley" was launched from Seahouses Harbour after the turn of one of the lowest spring low tides I've seen there, and accompanied by the two RNLI station Lifeboats, proceeded to sea. The intention has been to repeat the route taken by Grace Darling and her father, from Longstone Lighthouse to Big Harcar rock, and lay flowers. The swell left over from the previous day meant that was not practicable, so the Mersey did that part, whilst "William Riley" was rowed, staying quite close inshore, a short way towards Bamburgh.

The event was well attended by interested parties, including people from the Association of Lighthouse Keepers. At least one lighthouse keeper's daughter as well as a male descendent of the Darling family, were present. One of the challenges was to row for five minutes on a modern gym machine, to see if you could match Grace ........
