{OK} WHHR - Number 25

A replica carriage built for the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, in Porthmadoc.

This vehicle was one of a pair (Nos. 9 & 10) built in 1893 by The Ashbury Railway Carriage & Iron Co. for the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways (later the Welsh Highland Railway).

Both had doors at each end and glazing all along each side. They were built as all 3rd Class carriages, at some point the greenhouse effect resulted in the provision of additional droplights.

The coaches were cut down in 1923 to fit the restricted Ffestiniog Railway loading gauge. This was done by lowering them on their bogie bolsters and cutting the sides above the windows.

Renumbered in the WHR/FR scheme, it appears that 9 became No.25 and 10 No.23. However, 9/25 did not survive past WWII.

As part of the WHHR "Heritage Train project" it was decided to replicate No.25, but to the original Ashbury profile as the WHHR does not have such a limited loading gauge as the Festiniog Railway.

Whilst working on the components for the restoration of the Buffet Car, we were able to build a kit of parts for the replica - to the uncut down height. With the arrival of its new steel underframe to our workshop we erected the replica. This carriage was transported to Gelert's Farm in time to enter service in the May 2009 Gala. The mechanical works (ie brakes etc) were not finished in time, and No.25 eventually went into service in 2010.
