{OK} NER 1173 - Officer's Saloon

Built 1869 for the NER as a first class saloon, converted to an officer's saloon in 1892. After withdrawal had a peripatetic exitance before arriving at Tanfield in 1993. Part of the late Eric Maxwell's collection. Once fully refurbished & operational again, it would make a splendid "Cream Tea on the Train" experience.

This has suffered significant damage from being stored outside, despite the very careful wrapping and good quality tarpaulin that was used. Now in the 5-road shed, drying out and the potential work required is being assessed. Initial examinations confirmed a previous assessment that the one headstock is rotten and the wooden components with the buffers are all time-expired - or missing. Additionally, a number of interior fittings require some work, and the whole carriage exterior needs repainting and some roof work will also be needed.
The owners have asked Stanegate R&R to supply a new headstock, and a full set of wooden buffer pads[caps] and shrouds. These will be produced in our workshop from Green Oak, and fitting will then be arranged.
The first batch of oak has arrived [September 2023]
Finally [April 2024] the drawgear and damaged headstock have been removed - the metalwork is almost the full length of the carriage and required some work to extract from the chassis.
