Carriage Lighting ... first oil lamps then various types of gas fittings and finally electrical bulbs have all be used to illuminate railway carriages.

The Knotty Heritage Train is equipped with replica oil lamps and exterior chimneys, but illuminated using modern LEDs and battery power.

NER70 would have had oil lamps, and came with a number of original fittings, including an example of the "bung" or stopper for filling the hole in the roof during daylight hours.

Isle of Man Steam Railway's carriages were, initially, lit by oil lamps - sometimes one lamp was shared by two compartments - but by 1904 almost all the stock used Stone'e electric lighting, powered by dynamos [generators which were belt-driven from the nearest axle]. In fact, the Stone's Representative effectively lived on the Island during this period. New instructions for operations were devised in 1925, as the final "pairs" and new carriages were added to the established rakes. [Interestingly, F37 was an exception, and only powered it's own lamps]. Port Erin Museum has an original Stone's dynamo on display ...
During their restorations, we found that F62 came with light fittings, but F63 did not and there were few, if any, spares back on the Island. Stanegate Restorations & Replicas agreed to investigate the production of replica fittings to remedy the situation. This involved the production of new castings, glass globes, reflector dishes and new lED bulbs. followed by the assembly of the replica lamps and their wooden patresses.
