This little work-horse is a 4-wheel Diesel mechanical from the Hunslet Engine Co, Leeds. Built in 1950 with 2ft diameter wheels - engine is ??
It is an ex-National Coal Board locomotive, from Huncoat Colliery in Lancashire. It was named after Alf Robens, NCB Chairman [1961 - 1971] - his tenure included the Aberfan disaster in 1966, and his subsequent actions around the matter were heavily criticised in many quarters. His 1972 report on workplace health and safety led to the 1974 H&S at Work Act.

I recall the Aberfan disaster at 09:15 on 21st October1966 - as I was of a similar age to the child victims - and I think it likely that much of my social & environmental activism can be traced back to this event.
