Another sub-peak in new infections with the 'Indian' variant - and probably a few Omicron cases - in the UK's third wave.
There are so many new cases that the small proportion that develop severe symptoms requiring hospital treatment, do by themselves, become a significant number.
But many of those developing serious illness are unvaccinated or have not been boosted.
