PQR - quarry guard

This image shows a prison officer, on guard duty - patrolling the quarry rim - rifle and sword bayonet / cutlass at the ready, as convicts work in Stirling Hill quarry near Peterhead Prison. Although this was taken prior to 1959, the scene hasn't changed much from before WW1. This image was obtained during one of the limited number of times a press photographer had been allowed access to the prison.
