Years ago at Holme.. one evening.. first hubby and I were walking along the sands. He finds a little piece of canvas.... so we start to pull.. and pull and dig.. and pull.... and did I mention the tide is starting to return ?
We finally found an entire Spinnaker and ended up running to save getting wet !
St Cyrus is a huge beach just north of Montrose backed by dunes at one end and high cliffs at the other. There used to be salmon fishing stations all along the beach - you can still see the remains of old stone bothies and wooden posts for nets. The stretch of beach closest to the land is covered in fascinating driftwood, including whole tree trunks. When the tide goes out, the rest of the sand is revealed, a vast flat expanse which just invites fresh footprints....
It's possible the rope was tied around some bit of wreckage washed up on the beach, or it may at one point have been a tethering point for a net. I don't know. Or perhaps there WERE carrots at the other end.
