Let us imagine a world in which Truth, discovered at last, would be accepted by everyone, in which it would triumphantly whelm the charm of the proximate and the possible. Poetry would be inconceivable. But since, happily for poetry, our truths can scarcely be distinguished from fictions, poetry is not obliged to subscribe to them; if will therefore create a universe of its own, one as true, as false as our own. But not so extensive, not so powerful. Number is on our side: we are legion, and our own conventions possess that force which only statistics confer. To these advantages we may add one more, and not the slightest: that of wielding a monopoly of worn-out words.
