Hair has had to be styled through early age of humanity, if just to keep it out of the eyes. In ancient China, unmanaged hair “invariably denotes figures outside the human community: barbarians, madmen, ghosts and immortals,” according to one historian. ‘Tje terra-cota warriors in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the counting emperor of the Qin dynasty who dies in 210 BC., are precisely rendered with coifs containing their ethnic origin. According to Kayapo of Brazil, one anthropologist has observed, “each people has its own distinctive hairstyle, which stands as the emblem of its own culture and social community (and as such, in it own eyes for the highest level of sociality to hae been attained by humanity). . . . . . . . Before vanity mirrors, we would have been completely dependent on others to help us with our appearance, notably to manage “the bits around the back,” as primatologist Alison Jolly once put it. A caveman wouldn’t have been merely tidy, but elegant. As Jolly notes, “figurines of 25,000 years ago show women naked with beautiful braids.” ` Page 154
