Red Potato

The Red potato was first cultivated in the mountains of Peru. Spanish explorers then brought the potato with them on returning voyages and introduced it to Europe in the 1560s. When potatoes became popular and spread across Europe, they were also carried to the United States.

Red potatoes, botanically classified as Solanum tuberosum, is a broad category encompassing many different varieties that belong to the Solanaceae, or nightshade family along with tomatoes, eggplant, and bell peppers. Red potatoes are globally known for holding their shape well when cooked and can be used in a number of culturally diverse recipes. They are also widely popular being both commercially grown and cultivated in home gardens for individual use. Red potatoes are often labeled as "new potatoes,” though this categorization only refers to the Red potatoes that are harvested prematurely and have a small size.
