In India the core of the world was seen in concentrated and pure form in the Shiva linga. It is an aval black stone, with three white lines near the top, set in the yoni, a “womb” not into which the ‘phallus” plunges but out of which it rises. It is associated with Shiva, who dances in a ring of fire the unending dance of creation and destruction. The most sacred Shiva lingas, few in number and celebrated throughout India, are those made in the heavenly Ganga, that luminous cosmic torrent (which Europeans call the Milky Way) the Hindus see descending to Earth at Pashupatinath in the Himalayas, where the terrestrial Ganga, the Ganges River, begins and then travels across the subcontinent to plunge in the ocean and remerge in the most remote heavesn. The most sacred celestial Shiva lingas are found at Pashuypathinath. (These celestial Shiva lingas Europeans call meteorites.) The second most sacred Shiva lingas are terrestrial, formed by the Ganges River; they too are few in number. In a cave at Amarnath in Kashmir is found a Shiva lings of ice that reaches its fullest each year in July and summons tens of thousand of Hindus from all over the subcontinent who come to contemplate it the night of the full moon. Finally there are millions of Shiva lingas carved by human hand. On the small island of Gharapuri (Elephanta off Mumbai there is a cave whose walls have been abundantly carved. On the day of equinox, the setting sun sends a beam of light that glows on the Shiva linga in the core of the cave. The cosmic and terrestrial Shiva lingas are primary: in Hindu conception they could not be images of human genitals “projected” onto them; instead human genitals are tertiary images of them. Rather than making the human presence in the river plains, the caves, the mountains, and the sky, the Shiva lings marks the human anatomy with the Ganga, the cosmic river. ~ Page 69
