The origins of the European Roma remain somewhat contested, but many scholars agree that they moved into Europe from India during the middle Ages. The English world “Gipsy,” often applied as a pejorative term of insult, developed from the mistaken idea that the people in question originated in Egypt. The German term for Gypsies is “Zigeuner,” but it too has taken on negative connotations, so that many people now try to avoid using that label. Instead they prefer to speak of “Roma”. . . .

When Gypsies first arrived in medieval Europe, they encountered hospitality from some European courts. Soon, however, they became targets of hostility from Europeans who were suspicious of these newcomers. Whether from habit or because of coercion, many Gypsies were itinerant, and their mobile life style further rouses the antagonism of others. The rest of the European society labeled them thieves and tricksters who used their musical abilities and physical charms to lure the unsuspecting to their ruin. ~ Page 14
