Hauling in animal instincts to compare with human activities can be suitable way to show the grand continuity of life as Darwin understood it. But it can also be rhetorical strategy to cut human down to size, to reduce one (human) thing to another, much simpler (animal thing. There is no such reductionist or deflationary strategy entailed by Darwinian aesthetics. In ‘The African Queen,’ Humphrey Bogard character excuses his drinking by telling Rose Sayer, played by Katharine Hepburn, that “it’s only human nature.” I may surprise some readers, that this book is on the side of Rose’s famous retort: “Nature, Mr. Allnut, is what we are put in this world to rise above.” There is no need to accept Rose’s theology in order to acknowledge that great works of music, drama, painting, or fiction set is above the very instincts that make them possible. Paradoxically, it is evolution -- most significantly, the evolution of imagination and intellect -- that enable us to transcend even our animal selves, and it is a purpose of this book to show how natural and sexual selection placed Homo sapiens in this odd situation. ~ Page 9
