Today, Hawaii is still beautiful, but it’s a ghost of its former glory. Almost all of the native bird species are not extinct. Of the original 145 species of native birds, only 35 are left, and 24 of those are endangered, perhaps beyond saving. In place of the original diversity, Hawaii has now been infused with vegetation and animals imported from elsewhere. Of 1,935 flowering plant species on the island, says Wilson, 902 originated elsewhere, and those dominate the landscape. It’s the ecological equivalent of every town having a CVS and a Starsbucks. What’s happened in Hawaii has happened at a larger scale throughout the world.

How far has the Holocene extinction gone? It’s hard to know, not least because nobody knows how many species existed in the first place. Between 1.5 million and 1.8 million species have been named, but 100 million or so more may not have been discovered. Based on the area of habitat lost, estimates put the number of extinction at 140,000 species per year, but there is no figure that everyone agrees on. ~ Page 49
