The Lion Man and these other figurines are some of the earliest art in history. His serene animal-human countenance and the well-worn models of dangerous prey set the Aurignacians apart from the Neanderthals. Just the presence of a figure that is part human, part animal adds an entirely new dimension of our perceptions of the Cro-Magnons. These are far more than mere art objects. They are symbols of the burgeoning and obviously complex range of spiritual beliefs. ~ Page 137
....... This new, ever-changing partnership between the living and supernatural holds the clue to the Lion Man, depicted as a part-human, part-beast mythic creature. ~ Page 139
Who, then, was the Lion Man? Was he a mythic being or a living person with unusual supernatural powers? The lion-headed human figurine implies some form of transformation, an effortless passage between the living and supernatural realms. We will never, of course, be able to decipher the intended purpose of the Lion Man, but there is a good chance that he represented a "person of power" in his society, someone who maintained good relationships between the living and the forces of supernatural world ~ Page 140
