The range and variety of the language can clearly be seen by looking at just two of the stories. In the Nun’s Priest’s Tale, the language of high Romance -- used with open sincerity and admiration in the Knight’s Tale -- is used satirically to tell the mock-Romantic comic story of a vain cockerel and his favorite chicken:
