The common ancestor for all primates appeared about 65 million years ago. This protoprimate looked a lot like a squirrel and probably scurried about in trees much as squirrels do today. Now if you’re a squirrel and want to carry a nut home, then you will carry it in your mouth. Just like any other quadruped, your mouth is the only means you’re got for holding and carrying your stuff as you move about. We humans, of course, have hands with which we carry our baggage; but the manner of carrying, which is shared by the mouth and hands, is an evolutionary connection that persiss.
