//One of the central goals of Buddhist practice, dating back to the initial wanderings of Prince Gauthama, is that improve one’s happiness. This goal of personal happiness does not intuitively align with the often bittersweet, other-centered, self-denying aspects of wisdom. But the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, has argued that the Tibetan word for compassion, “tsewa,’ does not necessarily imply that compassion is directed only outward toward others, but that it also can be directed inward, toward the self, so that it is consistent with the search for happiness. “In a way,,” the Dalai Lama has said, “high levels of compassion are nothing but an advanced state of that self-interest.” ~ Page 123

The Buddhist tradition ascribes different colours to the rays of sun. thus across the Avadnasataka, when the buddha smiles, “a myriad band of light with a thousand colours comes out of his mouth and illuminates the ten directions like a rising sun”; the text specifies that “whenever the Blessed Buddhas produce a smile, rays of blue, yellow, red, and white light issue from their mouths.” David Flordalis (2013) has compared this with the Pravargya-Bhrhamana of the Taittirya-Aranyaka, where brilliant energy (tejas) escapes from Makha when he smiled.. . .
