Earthen kiln

Out walking around the Grin Low limeworks near Buxton I espied the top of a kiln next to a busy road. On closer inspection this proved to be a very large earthen kiln dating from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Stone was brought from a quarry on the north side of the road and drawn out down the steep bank to where a track had been built for carts. This is probably the best preserved example of this type of kiln that I have seen; even the gritstone pot lining was still in situ.
