Braysdown Colliery 18-4-60

Braysdown Colliery 18-4-60
Inspired by the recent image of Braysdown Colliery by Fray Bentos, I delved into the tarboat archives and found this view taken by my late friend Ron Dyer. The pit had been closed for six months and already much removal of infrastructure had taken place. The ropes have been removed from the shaft too.

There seems to be an interesting UK-US usage difference here: to me a "rope" has nonmetallic fibers. I'd call something with metallic strands a "cable."

Nice historical pic!

Cable is also used in the uk, however, in mining we have wire ropes! :-) I think it is a case of the word carrying on from when hemp ropes were used for winding many years ago.

And, come to think of it, I've seen the phrase "wire rope" over here, so the distinction--as usual!--isn't hard and fast. The qualifier "wire" seems to be necessary, though.
