Graham - I was pretty much fine with this film. I always develop film myself, in Perceptol, so that choice of developer means I need to rate the film 1 stop lower at 50 asa. However I think I probably forgot that fact when guessing the exposure for this one (tired after a day at work, not thinking too clearly) which means it was very under-exposed - hence the grain and contrast.
So it's not typical of the film.
If you check some of my earlier photos (go back about 10 previous to this one) there is a small series of Edinburgh photos from the same roll of ADOX Silvermax, which are much more indicative of how the film looks when you manage to get the exposure correct :)
I almost always use HP5+ just because I find it very forgiving of my hopeless exposure-guessing and chemical techniques - but this film seemed pretty easy to use too... I think I found it a bit more annoying trying to get it onto the spool... tendency to curl up a bit too much. But it was a fair bit cheaper than HP5+ when I got it :)
