Greece - poppies

During our travels through Greece - late May / early June - it was almost impossible to miss the poppies. Whether it’s surviving between the ancient stones of ruins or flamboyantly splattering on the green fields, we found those striking red ‘paparounes’ everywhere.

Googling around I found out that poppies in Greek mythology were used as symbols of sleep and death. In ancient Greece, the poppy was associated with the god of sleep - Hypnos - and the god of dreams, Morpheus. The drug morphine, got its name from Morpheus.

Oh Jaap...what a glorious floral show!! Gorgeous crimson beauties. You got so many lovely pictures of them, how wonderful. I enjoyed reading how prevalent they are around Greece. I do know that people sprinkle seeds everywhere to help spread them, as they are a sign of memorial and beloved in Europe for this reason. Did you see other colors or shades as well? This "blue-red" is my favorite of the reds with its deep, rich tones. The orange-red poppies are lovely too but do not have the strong color. Then there are all the other colors and mixtures. So many lovely flowers!!
