Out of the darkness

Out of the darkness
I don't know what I'm doing wrong when using flash! My photos of this little Burrowing Owl at the Calgary Zoo came out almost plain, jet black. I was able to find that there was something recorded on the image by using PhotoShop Elements, though of course it is horrible quality - apart from pehaps the eyes. The small owl enclosure is indoors.
