Baby Malti

Let me introduce you to Malti, the 7-week-old baby Asian elephant at the Calgary Zoo. She is now being allowed outside for a very short time, under supervision. I was so lucky this afternoon - within about 10 minutes of my arrival at the Zoo, I was right by the elephant house and so was privileged to see her for 15-20 minutes. She was born on 9th August. Her mother, Maharani, rejected her first calf in 2004, leading to the death of the baby just three weeks after it was born. Things seem to be going well this time, though.
