Taken from a canoe

On 27 July 2012, I was thrilled to get the chance to photograph (telemacro) a beautiful Yellow Pond Lily. Four of us had travelled NW of Calgary to the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, to botanize the land around the Centre. Wonderfully, we were asked if we would like to go out on the pond/lagoon not far from the building. A pretty amazing feeling to paddle a canoe through the reeds and then over calm, open water. I've only ever seen Yellow Pond Lilies at one other location that we have botanized, and fell in love with them instantly. Thanks so much, Judy (staff member at the Centre) for spending the whole day with us and for giving us this great, unexpected experience!
This native, aquatic member of the Water-lily family grows in lakes and ponds June to August. The small, yellow flower is 4-7 cm across, has 6 yellow, petal-like sepals and several small, inconspicuous petals.
