The Ardennes is a region of extensive forests, rough terrain, rolling hills and ridges primarily in Belgium and Luxembourg, extending into Germany and France; place of the World War I battle in 1914, and of the World War II invasion in 1940, and the World War II Battle of the Ardennes in 1944.
