Torre Truglia rises on a limestone cliff at the very tip of the Sperlonga promontory (LT). Rectangular in shape, with four sloping buttresses to deter an enemy from raising scaling ladders.
Built on the site of a Roman tower in 1532 to defend against the raids of Saracen pirates, it was destroyed during the passage of the Ottoman corsair Hayreddin Barbarossa, rebuilt in 1611 and again damaged by the Ottomans in 1623. Rebuilt in the following century, it was used for various purposes: lookout tower, headquarters for the Guardia di Finanza (Italy’s financial crimes enforcement unit) and today houses the Marine Environment Education Centre of the Regional Natural Park Riviera d’Ulisse
