Mining - Jerome, AZ
Folder: Mining
Jerome was famous for a big porphyry copper deposit that was worked from the late 19th century until the mid-20th. Both underground operations and later open-pit were used. The town is now highly touristified! There is a big (and excellent) mining museum, however.

Little Daisy Mine, Jerome, Arizona, USA. Now a small park (county or city). The shaft is 1900 feet deep and now covered by a thick layer of some transparent plastic (Plexiglas?). You can stand on it and look down! Jerome was a bit later than many of the mining towns in the US west--it was primarily for copper, not precious metals, and didn't shut down until the 1950s. The very latest activity was at an open pit in the mountain just northwest of town.
