And Empire, NV. Gerlach is a tiny town on the original "Feather River" railroad route; originally the Western Pacific, now part of the Union Pacific system. Its current claim to fame is that it is the closest permanent settlement to the "Burning Man" counterculture festival in the Black Rock Desert every Labor Day. Empire, alas, is becoming Nevada's newest ghost town, as the gypsum mine on which it depended shut down a few years ago.
