California - Afton Canyon

On the (usually) dry Mojave River in the middle of the Mojave Desert, California. The western end is a few miles south of Interstate-15. The Union Pacific Railroad goes thru the canyon on its route between L.A. and Las Vegas, but vehicle traffic is effectively blocked because of several deep fords. The canyon is of disproportionate importance to wildlife because the shallow bedrock locally forces water to the surface.
