Mining - Carrara/Bare Mtn, S. Nevada

Site of an attempt to quarry "marble" (altho a metalimestone, it's really not that high grade) around the time of the First World War. Remoteness and the marginal quality of the product doomed the venture. In a burst of over-optimism, the place was named after the Carrara marble in Italy. Carrara's just down the road from Rhyolite, and is roughly contemporaneous, but it isn't nearly so well known. I guess gold is a lot more glamorous than marble! The buildings have been fenced off, presumably to keep the ATV activity down to a dull roar. The fine mesh in the lower part of the fences is to keep desert tortoises from wandering onto the road.
