Sierra Nevada, California. Looking more or less south off US 395 near the top of Sherwin Grade. Mt. Tom (13,658 ft/4163 m) is named for Thomas Clark, an early settler in the area, who made the first known ascent in the 1860s. The easiest routes up are non-technical (class 2). Pine Creek is the prominent drainage on the right, which follows a classic glacially carved canyon. From this angle they're less obvious, but well-defined lateral moraines also extend out from the canyon into the valley below. The inset shows a view during a drier year!
