Beaver tree
A tree (probably a Great Basin cottonwood, Populus fremontii ), gnawed off by a beaver. I guess the beaver must've stood on the lower sideways logs to reach the gnaw point! As I've mentioned, beaver have made a big comeback since being hunted nearly to extinction in the early 19th century. Lake Lahontan State Park, Nevada, a reservoir on the Carson River.
