Thanks, George! That's looking east to the Sierra Nevada. The canyon dead ahead is Bloody Canyon, which is famous in the geologic community for preserving 2 generations of Pleistocene moraines. By complete happenstance a later glacial advance took a different path and so didn't clobber the older one.
You hear two stories about the origin of the name: either all the red metamorphic rock exposed high in the canyon, or bloody footprints left by Native Americans on the sharp rocks in the trail over the mountains.
