California coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), in Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, California. In the Bruce Lyon memorial grove (see left inset), just off the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (old US 101). The tree dwarfs the car; I couldn't fit the whole tree in the pic! The right inset shows the view up the trunk--without, unfortunately, scale.

THE FIRST TIME WE SAW THEM WAS IN THE EARLY 80S WHEN WE WERE LIVING IN WESTERN WASHINGTON. COMING FROM THERE WE WERE NOT EXPECTING TO BE IMPRESSED BY TREES--BUT WE WERE!
