Snowscape

Snowscape
Early in the series of winter storms we've been getting all this month. Scripps Wildlife area, Washoe Valley, Nevada. This area closes to the publc on the 15th of February to protect nesting birds, primarily waterfowl. It contains wetlands (at least at the present high water level!) representing the northern extension of Washoe Lake. Yes, the snow in the foreground has been sculpted by the wind!

February snowfall set a record at the Reno airport, and the storms continued into March! The Tahoe snowpack, last I heard, is something like 170% of normal for this time of year. So at least we won't have another drought this year!

We got a bit of a break this last week or so, and now (the 20th) it's raining again!

Have you read about Mammoth Mountain? 30 foot drifts, in the town?

You had a real winter this year! Ours more or less didn't take place, masses of snow in the Alps but hardly anything further north and much too warm...

That we did! Finally--no drought now. The snowfall at the Reno airport set a record for February. And Washoe Lake is now full again, three years running--first time that's happened in the 30 years we've lived here! Sorry to hear about your snow-less winter.
