When Nature Doesn't Come Through--

When Nature Doesn't Come Through--
Snow machine in operation at the Mt. Rose Ski Resort, near Reno, Nevada (and on the way to Lake Tahoe). They'll also run these machines, even once there's snow cover, in high-traffic areas where the snow tends to get worn away! The machine basically consists of an industrial-strength fan surrounded by misters; the idea is that the mist droplets freeze quickly and the tiny resulting crystals are a passable approximation to natural snow. Obviously the air temperature has to be below freezing for this to work! IIRC this machine is built by a Swedish company. AFAIK there are no US manufacturers of such devices.

As I understand it, they also run similar machines in the Australian skifields.

Yes, I even have seen Austrian Doppelmaier gondolas in New Zealand;-) The Alpine producers seem to have a near monoploy.

Snow-making capability has become a big deal for the resorts around here, because typically there are lots of subfreezing nights long before there's enough natural snow! So they can tout that they're "open", even though it's just a narrow strip of snow on just a couple of runs! I'm sure the same incentives operate elsewhere. I'm never tempted to ski when it's just artificial snow, because there's no place to bail out to! We always wait for whole-mountain coverage.
