I took this route once in something like 2003, but don't remember hardly any of it. I do remember the canyon of the Gunnison, but I found Colorado drivers to be so pushy in those days that it was impossible to enjoy highways like this.

I'm not fond of two-land roads that get lots of traffic for just that reason. It helps to be stopping now and again to take pictures! And we lucked out with the traffic here--it was very light, probably because there was lots of construction on 50 farther west. Back in the mid-90s we rode the excursion cableway right at the top of the pass, which goes to an observation platform, but it was closed due to the thunderstorms on this day!
