Union Pacific in Afton Canyon

Union Pacific in Afton Canyon
Along the (usually) dry Mojave River in the middle of the Mojave Desert, California, on its route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This was the original route between L.A. and Salt Lake City, built in 1905. Las Vegas as a city owes its founding to construction of the railroad; the railroad located a settlement there because of a large spring ("las vegas" = "the meadows" in Spanish), and the city now celebrates this as its founding. For the first couple of decades of existence Vegas was a little railroad town--only the construction of nearby Hoover (Boulder) Dam in the 1930s started its explosive growth in the 20th century.

The Mojave rises in the San Bernardino Mountains east of L.A. and flows northeast out into the desert. The canyon is of disproportionate importance to wildlife because the shallow bedrock locally forces water to the surface. Vehicle traffic thru the canyon is now effectively blocked because of several deep fords--even with my Jeep I didn't try them!

I'd love to take the train through here (and further north, through Rainbow canyon) -- probably not in my life time!

Turns out I was thru Rainbow Canyon on that family train trip we took from Vegas to Caliente back in the 60s--and I, of course, don't remember it at all! We did take the kids from Reno to Sacto on Amtrak back in the early 00s, when they were about 12, and it was a great disappointment. Dingy equipment, surly staff--and you couldn't see much but snow sheds anyway! I concluded that those who think the govt shouldn't be engaged in ventures like routine railroad operations may have a point--

I think much of the problem with Amtrak is how it was set up. It's way underfunded and I think the poor equipment just increases the chance that crews are going to feel like "who cares". The Amtrak trains in California that are heavily supported by CalTrans seem to have much better service than the national Amtrak trains and are often a pleasure to take.
