Electric fence and gate

Electric fence and gate
Which I opened very gingerly... ;) Independence Lake, Sierra Nevada, California, a moderate-sized reservoir now completely owned by the Nature Conservancy and open to hiking and other non-motorized uses. As I remarked below, I figure they must be grazing cattle too, and the fence is to keep them out of the picnic areas and campground. I think it would just make a bear mad!

Any explanation as to why an electric fence in such a location?

I figured to keep cattle out of the camping and picnic areas. It doesn't look sturdy enough for bears!

Interesting that they apparently have cattle in a nature conservation area.

Probably the use was grandfathered in for a number of years as part of the terms of sale, but they may be picking up some extra income from grazing rights!

Nature Conservancy does some very interesting projects where they agree to use of the land by farmers/ranchers in swap for the land not being sold off for development. One of the reasons I support the Nature Conservancy is that they work out such compromises rather than setting up impossible situations that result in the land not getting set aside.
