Beehive burner

I've always wondered what those structures were. Is it similar to a charcoal kiln?

It's about the same shape, but a whole lot bigger!

I'd always thought they were for sawdust burning, back when it was a waste product of a lumber mill rather than being valuable in its own right, but I wasn't sure, so I checked Wikipedia:

Turns out they were for the general burning of wood waste. A waste of resources and a source of pollution--it's probably well they've been phased out!

I'd forgotten about that, they were quite common in the Florida and much of the southeast from the pine industry. Thankfully we're much better at using it all now.
