Tacoma Narrows Bridge

A view from a small park on Puget Sound, looking back northeasterly. Washington state, USA. The bridge connects the Kitsap Peninsula with the city of Tacoma and so crosses salt water. Its predecessor is notorious as the suspension bridge that flew apart in a high wind, back in 1940, due to inadequate damping for certain resonances. The bridge was rebuilt in 1950, using the foundations of the original but otherwise new. A second, parallel bridge opened in 2008. It now carries southbound traffic, while northbound traffic uses the original. The new bridge is the nearer to the camera viewpoint.
