The "volcano" is actually Slide Mountain and is a fault block, part of the Carson Range (itself a branch of the Sierra Nevada) on the west side of the valley. It's mostly granite. What looks kind of like a crater from here is actually part of the original land surface that's been lifted on the fault along the front of the range--what we geologists call "relict" topography. Slide Mountain is also the site of our local ski resort, Mt. Rose. (Mt. Rose itself is not in the ski area!) You can see some of the ski runs from here.
