Shasta Dam, California, USA.

With Mt. Shasta showing up in the background! It's over 50 miles (80 km) away. The dam is on the Sacramento River at the north end of California's Central Valley and forms Lake Shasta. The chief engineer on this project, Frank Crowe, was also in charge of building Hoover (formerly Boulder) Dam. This was his last project; he died shortly after its completion.

Good picture, have never seen it from that perspective. That dam was built under New Deal monies, by the way...

Thanks--I'll check it out. Yeah, big dams were something of an icon of the New Deal, and indeed were a Democratic party staple for many years. Big gov't project, lots of jobs...what's not to like? ;) I believe it was Marc Reisner, in _Cadillac Desert_, who noted how there was a sea change in political attitudes toward big dams in the latter 60s, mostly in response to the proposals for dams in the Grand Canyon.
