Lake Billy Chinook

Central Oregon, USA. Looking south. The almost-isolated mesa in the center is The Island. It's not quite surrounded by water, but the mesa top _is_ isolated from cattle grazing, so it preserves a microcosm of the grassland habitat before the arrival of ranching. It's now a protected area. The channel at extreme right around the mesa is the course of the Deschutes River. The channel in the foreground and extending up to the left is that of the Crooked River, a major tributary of the Deschutes.
